What's Your Motivation

It is important that we begin to make exercise a habit rather than just a 'means to an end.' Most have heard of that term but what does it actually mean? A 'means to an end' is defined as: a thing that is not valued or important in itself but is useful for achieving an aim. So often people begin an exercise program in order to: lose weight, fit into a certain outfit, or get ready for bikini season. But what happens when they achieve their goal? Quite often...they quit. If the sole motivating factor for beginning an exercise program is to lose weight what will keep one going after the weight is lost? However, if a person is driven by their desire to lose weight AND to have better health they have more of a chance of sticking with it. That is because the latter goal is one that is ongoing rather than superficial. It is vital that we begin to view exercise as an important and necessary part of our lives just as eating or sleeping is.
"Those who do not find time for exercise will have to find time for illness"(Earl of Derby)
We need to remember that our bodies were
designed to move, not be sedentary. Making exercise a habit is not always easy especially if you are a person who does not find exercise enjoyable. Some people just simply have a negative view towards the word 'exercise' because they relate it to being uncomfortable or being in pain. Some even find it boring. If that is what is stopping you my suggestion would be to find something you like to do that keeps you active. It does not have to be something that we traditionally think of as exercise like running, getting on the treadmill, or doing step classes. Take a dance class, go hiking, go swimming, do yard work, join a sports team, or just simply get out and walk! The point is: DO something and stop making excuses!
